The state Department of Transportation has committed to building a bridge over a creek that, when flooded by Tropical Storm Alberto, caused the collapse of West River Road. The storm, which came through in early June, caused Buffaloe Creek to flood a triple box culvert under the road and a portion of the roadway collapsed under the pressure.

The Louisburg Town Council agreed to use a combination of loans and grants on Wednesday to fund a $3.5-million project that will shore up some sewer headaches while now ensuring that every home in town has sewer service.

Still negotiating a new Kerr-Tar Hub site off Bert Winston Road in Franklin County, while property tax dollars are flowing in, the county’s departments are busy this month. Franklin County Department heads have reported the following activities:
Three Franklin County commissioners left for a national conference in Chicago on Friday. County Manager Chris Coudriet and commissioners Sidney Dunston, Raymond Stone and Lynwood Buffaloe were expected to attend the National Association of County Commissioners conference, which wraps up next Wednesday.
Taco Bell is still coming to Louisburg, but it won’t be in the old El Perico building. Teresa Eberwein, director of marketing for Luihn Food Systems Inc., which bought the property and prepared to put a Taco Bell-Long John Silver’s combination restaurant in the old building, said Friday that a Taco Bell would instead be placed inside the KFC restaurant as a combination venture.

LOUISBURG — From Ricky Person to Chad Bumpers to Randy Mitchell to Jeremy Arrington (and many more), Louisburg High School has boasted its share of amazing offensive football talents over the past decade.
Because of that, LHS has amassed some prolific offensive numbers. But even with such a lofty standard, LHS head coach James Collier feels like his 2006 contingent has the capability to be the school’s best offense.

LOUISBURG — Another fun, successful season concluded Thursday for the Town and Country Swim Team. TC, competing at home, fell 184-173 to a strong Finley YMCA Flyers’ squad out of Raleigh. But the setback didn’t take away from the many accomplishments the Stingrays enjoyed this summer.

FRANKLINTON — From the first time Chad Alston stepped into the Franklinton High School gymnasium as a freshman, then-FHS head basketball coach Thurman Jordan knew he had the potential for something special.
During his gridiron playing days at Louisburg High School, Simeo Smith was always thought of as a gentle giant — a large man with an even bigger heart. So it was no surprise when news filtered out of Savannah, Ga., that Smith had committed a heroic act that helped save the life of a young child.
Foreign high school students are scheduled to arrive soon for academic semester and year program homestays, and the sponsoring organization needs a few more local host families.

LOUISBURG - Helen Cooley Smith, 87, died Saturday, July 29, 2006 at Franklin Regional Medical Center. Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Aug. 1, at Lancaster Funerals and Cremations in Louisburg, with the Rev. Mark Lynch officiating. Burial followed in the Murray family cemetery.
