Ex-county manager sues sheriff, alleges defamation

LOUISBURG -- Franklin's former county manager filed a lawsuit against Sheriff Kevin White, accusing him of defamation that led to the loss of her job and reputation.
White's attorney called the lawsuit baseless.
Kim Denton's lawsuit is seeking damages from White in his individual capacity, arguing that the social media campaign he waged against her was outside his scope and official duties as sheriff.

FALL FEST
FALL FEST

Youngsville, Youngsville Kiwanis and Grace Ministries combined last Saturday to host the annual Youngsville Fall Festival & Car Show. The event, at Faith Baptist Church, featured craft and food vendors, as well as a free kids fun zone. And, plenty of those, young and old, took advantage. Above, and you're not seeing double, twins Eleni and Victoria Demertzsis show off their throwing skills, tossing "doggie bones" at a target to win prizes at the event.

Chastain wins back right to again seek elected office

LOUISBURG -- A superior court judge has notified attorneys that an ousted clerk of court can seek office again.
Superior Court Judge Thomas Lock's decision -- when issued and filed -- would end a more than five year legal battle that began when a Louisburg attorney Jeffrey Scott Thompson asserted in the summer of 2020 that Patricia Chastain was unfit to serve as clerk of superior court.
Chastain filed for and ran for the clerk of court post in 2022 -- while her legal status remained pending -- but lost by just more than 400 votes.

Louisburg pays big bucks for '23 audit

LOUISBURG -- The Louisburg town council took a major step toward clarifying its financial status Tuesday evening, first by appropriating the money to pay for the special audit report that's been underway for months, then hearing Mayor Christopher Neal promise a special meeting within a month to release the details of the 2023 audit publicly.
The auditing company, PB Mares, had submitted a bill for $144,500 for the audit of 2023 -- way above the preliminary estimate of $48,500 -- and the council quickly approved a budget amendment to cover that cost.

As fall arrives, county's court project cost increases
As fall arrives, county's court project cost increases

If anyone had any doubts about fall being in the air, Mother Nature certainly erased those doubts last weekend, especially on Sunday.
Cloudy, an off-and-on drizzle and brisk breezes -- which sometimes reached downright windy levels -- made it clear that fall is indeed here.
Fortunately, most of that Nor'easter stayed well east of Franklin County and we got a little rain that was desperately needed.
Out Mapleville way, east of The Burg, we recorded just about three-quarters of an inch, less that what we need but more than enough to settle the dust.

Is a 'collective madness' taking hold in America?

Dear editor: Alduous Huxley once commented that the most important lesson of history is that we don't learn very much from the lessons of history. I agree with him, but these days I'm even more pessimistic. I'm not sure we ever learn anything at all.
The slogan "Never again" was first used by survivors at Buchenwald to denounce fascism and the evil of genocide. It gained currency through the years, appearing on memorials, and acquiring a broader meaning as a statement against hatred and injustice.
