BUNN - Bunn almost had much more to celebrate than just Senior Night Wednesday afternoon in the Ladycats’ regular season finale. But with a share of the Northern Carolina Conference girls soccer championship at stake, the Ladycats were defeated 4-2 by perennial power Roanoke Rapids at the BHS Soccer Field.
HENDERSON - With the outcome suddenly in doubt, a freshman’s opportune score went a Long way to securing a Class 2-A regional birth for the Franklinton High golf squad Tuesday. With rival Bunn making a late surge to snare the No. 2 spot in the Northern Carolina Conference, Franklinton maintained that position thanks to a clutch 79 from Mike Long at the difficult Kerr Lake Country Club.

FRANKLINTON -- It’s no contest again -- the Bunn High School girls track and field dynasty continues in the Northern Carolina Conference.
Bunn took yet another NCC championship Wednesday as the Ladycats soared to 161 points to outdistance second-place Southern Vance (84).
Now that the Pigskin Preview has gone to hog heaven, Wake Forest-Rolesville will host a Friday Night Pigksin Kickoff Aug. 11.
In the past, that would have been the weekend that the Pigskin Preview was held at Carter-Finley Stadium on the campus of North Carolina State University in Raleigh.

Tuesday’s defeat of a $45-million school bond sent school staff and officials back to the drawing board — literally.
More than $37 million of that money was expected to pay for a new high school for Franklinton and Youngsville students, a course of action pursued after school staff initially proposed using $5 million from a 2004 school bond to make improvements at the school.

There will be a new sheriff in town this fall and, already, the two candidates vying for the top spot are generating support from their comrades. Former Franklin County Sheriff’s Office Lt. Pat Green beat out incumbent Sheriff Jerry Jones and fellow former Lt. Joe Lynch for the Democratic nomination when he garnered 48 percent of the vote May 2.

Attorneys for the widow of a deputy who was killed in a 2004 helicopter crash filed a wrongful death lawsuit Friday against a dozen defendants, including Franklin County, Sheriff Jerry Jones and former deputy Ben Barrick.

The first case of rabies for 2006 in Franklin County has been confirmed.
Animal Control Officer Maylon Edwards said Wednesday that a raccoon tested positive for the virus, which is fatal in humans.
A pet dog dragged the raccoon into a yard, and AC sent a sample off for testing to a state laboratory, Edwards said.

The Franklin County Tourism Development Authority met this week, looking at ways to market and promote tourism.
The TDA was put in place this spring after county commissioners enacted an occupancy tax it began collecting in February.
The authority, made up of members of the hospitality industry and residents, determines how those funds are spent.
So far, more than $7,600 has been collected.

FRANKLINTON -- Franklin County’s boys basketball history is filled with great coaches who honed their craft here before moving on to higher-level challenges.
The roll call is impressive -- Lin Green, David Neal, Scott McInnes, Terry Davis, Dexter Cooley and Andy Wheeler, among many others.
One of the most talented players in Louisburg College men’s soccer history is now competing professionally.
Armando Romero, a 2004 LC grad who went on to finish his college career at Radford University, debuted last Saturday for the Charleston Battery of the first-level United Soccer League.
FLORENCE, S.C. -- Louisburg College will enter next week’s Region X Baseball Tournament as the No. 4 seed after taking three of four games last weekend in LC’s regular season league finale at Florence-Darlington Tech at Legion Park.
ROCKY MOUNT -- Kyle Robertson and the North Carolina Wesleyan Battling Bishops baseball team will begin Division III regional action May 18 at a site to be determined.
The regional winner will then advance to the national tournament.
