State Court of Appeals upholds Louisburg's choice to move monument in a split decision
GOING DOWN. The summer 2020 removal of the Confederate statue took with it street-level protests about the monument.
State Court of Appeals upholds Louisburg's choice to move monument in a split decision

RALEIGH -- The State Court of Appeals affirmed a trial court's decision -- ruling that plaintiffs opposed to Louisburg's decision to remove a Confederate statue had no legal standing to challenge the action in court.
As a rule, those challengers have 30 days to file a notice of appeal, taking the matter to the State Supreme Court.
Louisburg attorney Larry Norman, who represents the dozen residents who challenged the town's action, declined immediate comment.

Judge places some caveats on the reopening of troubled corner store

LOUISBURG -- A superior court judge issued an order, setting parameters by which a troubled Louisburg convenience store could re-open.
The long-term viability of the In N Out corner store remains pending.
Following two days of hearings, Superior Court Judge Craig Croom signed a list of guidelines on Tuesday that -- until a trial on the merits takes place -- property operators will have to follow, including:

Another county decision based on bad information

Once again Franklin County officials have made an important, far-reaching decision based on incorrect information and inadequate research -- then tried to justify it by relying on unsubstantiated fears.
Sadly, we're talking here about the decision to destroy the 93-year-old downtown movie theater so that the county can put up a courtroom shrine to local crooks -- and then spend money putting officials' names on a big bronze plaque.

County's growing pains will need more than aspirin to fix

You'll see a full story in next week's edition, but the issues of growth and development dominated the town of Franklinton's government agenda on Tuesday night.
Certainly, it's no shocker.
I mean, check any graph, report or census checker you want and you'll see that Franklin County is one of the fastest growing counties in the state.
Heck, you don't need much research to note the impact.

LHS' EXTRA WEEK

LOUISBURG --Unlike most of his colleagues, Louisburg High School coach Dontae Lassiter has no problems with sitting out the first week of the prep football season.
Lassiter has always preferred to give his club one extra week of practice in order to prepare for the upcoming campaign -- a belief that will certainly come in handy during the Warriors' 2023 gridiron schedule.

FHS' Wealth Of Talent

FRANKLINTON -- Tom Harris isn't about to apologize for the near-embarrassment of riches that his Franklinton High School volleyball squad possesses.
That's because Harris knows a Big East Conference Championship isn't a guarantee this fall, though the skipper has more grandiose plans for his Lady Rams.
Despite its wealth of successes in recent years, Franklinton has yet to put together a strong postseason run in the ultra-competitive NCHSAA Class 3-A State Playoffs.

Okra nutrition facts and health benefits
Okra nutrition facts and health benefits

Okra is the edible pod of the okra plant. You probably know it best for its soluble fiber content, which creates what is sometimes described as a slimy goo. The gooeyness can be minimized by stir-frying at high heat or cooking in a soup or stew such as gumbo, where the fiber disperses and provides a thickening agent. If you cook okra with an acidic food, such as lemon juice, vinegar, or even tomatoes, it helps to cut down on the slime factor.
Okra is high in fiber and provides many vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which can offer health-promoting properties.

Board of Ed pushes state to fully fund low-wealth schools

LOUISBURG -- The Franklin County Board of Education again went on record, unanimously, on Monday night urging the state's General Assembly to fully fund several "low-wealth" counties, including Franklin, so that students in those counties will have a "sound basic education."
The issue has been simmering in the courts for the last 29 years after the parents of Robb Leandro, for whom the case was named, who was a student in Hoke County but was not getting a "sound basic education" because of funding disparities across the state.

County pledges to give airport board better guidelines

LOUISBURG -- Franklin County management committed to crafting policies and procedures that more accurately reflect the reality of its airport advisory board.
In early 2018, members of the Triangle North Executive Airport board agreed to put the operations of the airport under the authority of county government.
Up until that point, the board had oversight over day-to-day operations, including hiring and firing authority -- a power that none of the other county-only boards had the authority to perform.
