RALEIGH — Franklin County will be home to a Civil War exhibit beginning this coming week.
Determination, commitment and pride are among many characteristics of North Carolinians depicted in the “Freedom, Sacrifice, Memory: Civil War Sesquicentennial Photography Exhibit.”
The exhibit commemorates the state’s role in the Civil War (1861-1865), a defining period in United States history.

LAKE ROYALE — Kwanzaa is an African American cultural celebration that is recognized during a week of gathering and communing.
But it’s more than just seven days, participants said.
“Kwanzaa doesn’t end,” said Sauuda Y. Eshe, a participant in the program held at the Lake Royale Clubhouse on Dec. 26 — the first day of the seven-day celebration.

FRANKLINTON — Work has begun on a field that will help fill the dreams of the physically and mentally challenged.
The Miracle League of Franklin County has already begun playing baseball at Louisburg High School’s softball field, giving those with physical and mental limitations an opportunity to play the sport.
Now, though, construction has begun on their own field at Long Mill Elementary.

LOUISBURG — The Franklin County Board of Commissioners are slated to meet at a special time in a special place.
They are scheduled to meet at 9 a.m. Wednesday to visit three sites that an advisory group feels are best suited for a new county park.

GOOD MORNING: In what has become an annual event, some 20 or more members of the Louisburg High School Band, under the direction of Brian D. Miller and Mrs. Tracy Winstead, stopped off by our home out on Terrell Lane Friday before Christmas and serenaded us with Christmas Carols.
As I have recalled previously, I had the privilege of playing in the original group that was then the Mills (now Louisburg) High School Band back in the early 1940’s, and I look forward to their annual visit with great anticipation.
The nursery rhyme warns that you should never kill the goose that lays the golden egg.
Yet our state appears focused on slaughtering the only golden “geese” that small towns have seen in the last few years.
As everyone who lives in small towns knows, the proliferation of huge chain stores, the loss of jobs, the problems in the auto industry and the incessant, impossible to ignore effects of the Internet and web-based shopping have put a serious hurt on small towns and the small businesses that make them unique.
Everyone’s life experiences and education form the caldron where individual opinions and reactions are formed.
That’s never been more true than now as the nation wrestles with the senseless and horrific tragedy in a New England school house.
I grew up in a small town (about the size of Bunn) on a street where every male of a certain age was a World War II veteran who loved to hunt and fish.

FAYETTEVILLE —John T. Davis Jr., 84, died Saturday, Dec. 22, 2012. He had been at the state Veteran’s Home for two years.
FRANKLINTON —Cecil Bell Collie, 72, died Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012 at his home. A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
SPRINGFIELD, MASS.- Joseph Lynwood Nicholson “Nick,” 80, died Sunday, Oct. 14, 2012. He was born in Bunn to the late Andrew and Sarah Harris Nicholson. Prior to moving out of state, he taught and coached at Gethsemane High School.
GREENSBORO —Bonnie Lancaster Cyrus, 99, a patient of the Skill Care Unit of Whitestone, a Masonic and Eastern Star Community, died Wednesday morning, Dec. 26, 2012. Visitation will be held at L. Harold Poole Funeral Services, 944 Old Knight Road, Knightdale, from 1 to 2 p.m. today (Saturday, Dec. 29). Funeral service will follow at 2 p.m. in the funeral home chapel. Burial will be at Montlawn Memorial Park.
LOUISBURG - Charlie Morise Evans, age 84, of Louisburg, NC died peacefully at home Wednesday morning after an extended illness. Funeral services were held Friday, December 28th, at 11:00 a.m. at Louisburg United Methodist Church. The family received friends one hour prior to the service in the Fellowship Hall of the church. Burial followed in Lancaster Memorial Park.
ROCKY MOUNT —Donnie Qualls Denton, 78, died Thursday, Dec. 27, 2012.
PINEHURST, NC - Emma “Shirley” Jones Paquette died December 25, 2012. She was born May 13, 1931 in Richmond, Virginia, to J.W.F. Jones and Emma Gephart Jones. She was married for 58 years until her husband Dean R. Paquette died in 2011.

BUNN -- Tradition is an important part of the holiday season -- and the same goes for the Bunn High School boys basketball squad.
Over the years, the Wildcats have made a holiday habitat of defeating higher-classification opponents in a tournament setting.
HENDERSON -- Franklinton secured a key victory at the Southern Vance Girls Holiday Classic on Thursday -- and gained a much-needed measure of revenge in the process.
Taking on an Oxford Webb crew that had topped FHS twice earlier in the campaign, the Lady Rams rolled to a 43-24 decision at the SVHS Gymnasium.

BUNN -- Maybe the Bunn Ladycats can be a postseason factor after all.
Bunn, in Benj Daniels’ first year as head coach, has gotten off to a slow start in 2012-13 -- thanks in part to the graduation of several key performers, along with a brutal early schedule.
That’s why Bunn’s reward was two-fold following Thursday’s 55-49 victory over Kinston in the first round of the Bunn Christmas Basketball Tournament.
It worked so well in 2012, the Louisburg Warriors will be returning to the Taylor Center once again this coming year.
Twice.
Due to small capacity of the LHS Gymnasium, school administrators moved last season’s scheduled basketball doubleheader with Bunn to the Taylor Center on the campus of Louisburg College.
The result was a much more comfortable experience for fans from both teams.

HENDERSON -- Several Vance-Granville Community College student-athletes visited with children at the Child Care Center on the college’s Main Campus in December.
Among other activities, the VGCC students read books with winter and holiday themes, such as “How the Grinch Stole Christmas” and Clifford the Big Red Dog’s “The Little Red Sled,” to all the classes at the center, which serves children from ages one to four.
FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Wildlife-related outdoor recreation increased dramatically from 2006 to 2011.
The national details are shown in the final report of the 2011 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation, which was released recently by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.
The Final Report, which follows the August 2012 Preliminary Review and the September 2012 State Overview, provides more information on the types of activities and money spent for fishing, hunting, and wildlife watching.
FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Wells Fargo, along with the North Carolina High School Athletic Association, has announced the standings for fall sports in the Wells Fargo Cup competitions for the 2012-13 academic year.
The Wells Fargo Cup recognizes the high schools that achieve the best overall interscholastic athletic performance within each of the state’s four competitive classifications. The Cup program is in its 34th year.

A wreck on Bickett Boulevard sent two people to the hospital, but police did not issue any citations in the two-vehicle wreck. According to Louisburg Officer Andy Castaneda, Janie Vines, 54, was pulling out from Sandalwood Avenue onto Bickett Boulevard at about 2 p.m. on Thursday when the accident occurred. A tractor trailer was stopped in the right, northbound lane of Bickett, Castaneda said, and Vines pulled out, apparently not seeing a 1999 Toyota Corolla driven by Horauo Sandoval, 21, of Henderson.
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are investigating two separate armed robberies.
Charles Brown reported the afternoon of Dec. 23 that he had been robbed at gunpoint the previous evening.
According to the report by Dep. Kevin Perry, Brown told authorities that four people he knew stole cash, an iPhone and iPad from him during a party at a home in the 400 block of Mitchell Store Road near Youngsville.

A new restaurant is scheduled to open the week of Jan. 7 in Louisburg and the goal, according to its owner, is good food, good service and good value.
To be known as Johnny Bull’s Steakhouse, the restaurant will be in the former Ribeyes’s building behind the Bojangles restaurant.
