'Falls' project moves ahead; Burg's budget approved

LOUISBURG -- Two significant items sailed through the Louisburg Town Council Monday night, both unanimously and with neither debate nor discussion.
The council approved rezoning 45 acres at the intersection of U.S. 401 and Fox Park Road as one step toward turning the proposed Louisburg Falls mixed-used development into reality.

Taxes hiked, two projects cut to balance Franklinton budget

FRANKLINTON -- Town commissioners approved a $3.38 million budget, but not before cutting two public-private projects from the budget.
And, they didn't approve the 2022-23 budget before they agreed to use $300,000 from savings to balance the current budget.
Both of those decisions were made unanimously.

Runway 'turbulance' first step toward major improvements

LOUISBURG -- Airport operations are moving ahead, full throttle, its director told county management and advisory board members.
However, they'll be pared back starting next month.
Significant work is slated to start in July on an $11.6 million project to overhaul the runway and surfaced areas at Triangle North Executive Airport.

Mobile STEM lab brings science to every corner of county

FRANKLINTON -- United Way and Novozymes recently unveiled its Innovation Mobile Lab, a science and technology-outfitted bus it hopes will be a driving force to gets in every corner of the county interested in science.
Last year, Novozymes donated $100,000 to renovate and equip the bus, making it a mobile science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) center.

Summer just officially arrived on Tuesday, the 21st, but even for the first few days of summer, it's been pretty darn hot around these parts -- with the exception of one beautiful weekend following a big storm on Friday.
Many of the days we've had lately would fit perfectly into mid-August -- but they have arrived early this year and that may not bode very well for July, August and maybe even September.

It was considered a pretty significant luxury, generally reserved for those who were considerably well off.

HENDERSON, NC--Richard Alan McCarroll, 84, of Henderson, formerly of Central Square, NY died June 21, 2022 surrounded by his family. He was born on December 30, 1937 in Kearney, NJ to the late Albert and Ada Dunham McCarroll. In addition to his parents he was predeceased by a son, Richard Allen McCarroll; and a grandson.

GREENSBORO -- During his tenures at Louisburg College and East Carolina University, Billy Godwin developed a penchant for having his teams peak when it mattered the most.
Now the head baseball coach at UNC-Greensboro, Godwin turned that trick once again this spring as the Spartans, after a slow start, rebounded late in the year to post a historic campaign.

WHAT A NIGHT!!

BUNN -- It was a night to remember recently as Bunn High School hosted an Alumni Baseball Game on the BHS campus.
A whopping 23 former players and coaches took part in the fun event, which raised $2,640 for the Bunn High School baseball program.
"This game brought years of experience back to the diamond,'' said game organizer Donna Wade. "It also gave the Class of 2020 something they did not get -- a last game.''

FRANKLINTON -- Franklinton High School has a new head football coach -- but he is certainly a familiar face to the program.
Elerod 'Mo' Morris, who has been an assistant at FHS during Jimmy Williams' four-year tenure, has been promoted to head coach for the coming campaign.
The personable Morris, a Bertie County native, was a three-year letterman for Bertie High School, graduating in 1984.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- Jean Carmona went 3-for-3 with three runs and a two-run home run, Zack Raabe went 3-for-4 with two runs, and Jackson Chourio doubled and tripled while leading the host Carolina Mudcats to a 12-6 series finale victory versus the Columbia Fireflies on Sunday night at Segra Park.
The Carolina League North-leading Mudcats won their fourth straight game and remained in first place by one game in the first-half standings.

Thunderstorm topples tree; local man is killed

YOUNGSVILLE -- A Franklin County man was killed last week in a storm-related accident.
According to authorities, Herbert Ramirez Perez, was outside at 8 Cleghorns One Drive at about 6:30 p.m. on June 17 when a tree fell.
The 25-year-old was killed in the incident.

Mobile home moving case is headed to court

LOUISBURG -- One of the suspects charged by the State Department of Insurance with mobile home work fraud is slated to appear in court next month.
One of them has already pled guilty and received a prayer for judgement in the case.
On March 17, special agents with the State Department of Insurance and Franklin County sheriff's deputies arrested John Edward Hight and Ernest Broughton Tharrington Jr., charging them both with two felony counts of obtaining property by false pretense and two misdemeanor counts of setting up mobile homes without a license.

Water allocations draw complaint

LOUISBURG -- Franklin County commissioners agreed to provide water and sewer to three residential developments.
And, staff and officials said they'd work to address a mishap that -- without resolution -- might prevent another development from continuing its buildout in a timely manner.

This Ham day is not about pork!

YOUNGSVILLE -- Ham radio operators from the Franklin Country Amateur Radio Club -- FCARC in Franklin County and the surrounding areas will be participating in a national amateur radio exercise from 2 p.m. on Saturday until 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 25 - 26.
The event is ARRL Field Day (www.arrl.org/FieldDay), an annual amateur radio activity organized since 1933 by ARRL, the national association for amateur radio in the United States.

Woman shot, local man faces charges

LOUISBURG -- Sheriff's deputies arrested a Louisburg man they allege was responsible for a shooting that sent a woman to the hospital.
Emergency rescue crews and sheriff's deputies responded to 35 Abca Lane, off Ronald Tharrington Road, to find Janika Williams suffering from a gunshot wound to the stomach the afternoon of June 17.

Fireworks' loss causes county to nix festival

LOUISBURG -- Franklin County has cancelled all of its Independence Day festivities this year.
Franklinton's Stand up for America Independence Day event is slated to continue as scheduled.
The county's event, slated for July 1, was to culminate in a fireworks display.
