YOUNGSVILLE -- Things are taking flight at Triangle North Executive Airport, county staff and airport advisory board members say.
Interim Airport Director Bo Carson is working to standardize hangar leases.
County Manager Angela Harris said plans to bring sewer to the airport are well underway.

Santa visited the Louisburg United Methodist Church's annual holiday bazaar Saturday morning, one of his first official stops of the holiday season locally -- and he was a hit with many youngsters, although some of the smaller ones were just a little intimidated by the Jolly Old Gent from the North Pole, especially with that big beard and bright red suit.

BUNN -- Commissioners have tasked an engineer with crafting a feasibility study that will help guide plans for a new town hall.
It was one of many discussion topics the board had during a special called meeting on Nov. 16 that served as a work session.
They discussed topics ranging from a new town hall, to personnel, to food trucks.

LOUISBURG -- County leaders and staff went into Monday's retreat with plans to build on priorities they established in March, figure out ways to make their visions for Franklin County's future a reality, and establish ways to measure their progress.
The scheduled five-hour session took place after press deadline for The Franklin Times, but when reached prior to the meeting, staff and officials said retreats are necessary steps to move the county forward.

YOUNGSVILLE -- Since 2012, according to unofficial statistics, there have been more than 500 fatalities as a result of house fires in North Carolina.
In Franklin County, since 2009, there have been at least seven fatalities attributed to house fires.
That doesn't include the millions of dollars in damage caused by fires each year.

First a confession: This week I actually got to do exactly what some politicians have been accusing me of doing for years.
I got to sling mud.
For years, those who have been stung by stories we have written would resort to the unfounded allegation that all we were doing was slinging mud.

Don't look now, but Turkey Day is upon us!
For the last couple of days -- maybe even earlier in some homes where cooks prepare food well in advance -- ovens have been heated up, cooktops filled with pots and pans and everyone will be eagerly awaiting the fun, food and fellowship which comes with one of this country's favorite holidays, Thanksgiving.

I know what you're thinking: The election is over.
For at least the next month, or so, I don't have to think about politics.
The roadways won't be cluttered with campaign signs.

This is Part 2 to a column I recently wrote concerning a survey titled "Shifting Boundaries" that was given to 11-year-old children at the Terrell Middle School in Louisburg.

SANFORD - When the postscript is finally written on the 2018 Franklinton High School football season, one intangible will undoubtedly be accentuated.
This is one resilient, never-give-up bunch.
That attribute was on display the entire season for FHS, including a miraculous comeback victory at Wilson Fike in October that eventually served as a springboard for the Red Rams to qualify for the Class 3-A State Playoffs.

LOUISBURG -- To long-time area spike observers, it's difficult to believe that Erica Wammock has now served for 13 yards as the head coach at Louisburg High School.
It seems like yesterday when Wammock was playing for the Lady Warriors in the late-1990s before spending two years as a softball player at Louisburg College.

FRANKLINTON -- No team has been capable of defeating the Franklinton Lady Rams on the volleyball court since they joined the Big East Conference before the 2017 campaign.
Through two years, Franklinton is undefeated in the league and has claimed the Big East's regular season and tournament championships in each of those seasons.

AHOSKIE -- A sub-.500 campaign is almost unheard of for the Bunn High School football program, but that will be the final fate for this year's version of the Wildcats.
That's because Bunn was eliminated from the postseason -- and finished 5-6 overall -- after falling last Friday at homestanding Hertford County by a 24-12 margin in the opening round of the Class 2-AA State Playoffs.

NEW LONDON -- North Stanly came into last Friday's postseason duel against Louisburg with an on-fire offense that had delivered at least 42 points in each of the Comets' last seven games.
Make that eight after North Stanly had no problem with the visiting Warriors as part of a 70-0 triumph in the opening round of the Class 1-AA State Football Playoffs on the NSHS campus.

FRANKLIN COUNTY -- The 11th Annual Combat Warriors Deer Hunt was held Nov. 2-5 in Franklin County and the warriors stayed at the cabin on Mrs. Mavis Nelms farm, Highway 39 S. about 2 miles outside of Louisburg.
What a great and successful event it was , with (18) total warriors; made up of Marines, U S Army troops, and Navy Seals.

FRANKLINTON -- Four players and one coach from Franklinton High School have garnered honors on the North Carolina Soccer Coaches Association's Class 3-A Region 3 All-Region Team.
Red Rams on the prestigious squad were junior keeper Galen Day, junior defender Hayden Johnson, junior defender Josiah Caronna and sophomore midfielder Lucas Martinez.

BRIDGEWATER, VA -- The North Carolina Wesleyan College football team completed its season last Saturday by falling 21-14 on the road to non-conference opponent Bridgewater College (Va.).
It was a makeup game from Sept. 15 postponed due to Hurricane Florence.

The Kerr-Vance Academy Girls Tennis Team recently won its first-ever North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association State Championship. The Lady Spartans defeated Northeast Academy in the title match in Winston-Salem to close with a sterling 15-1 overall record. The Kerr-Vance Academy Volleyball Team earned the Class 1-A North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association State Championship on October 27 in Charlotte. Franklin County Arts Council is planning Christmas at the Gallery on Main beginning with a tree trimming ceremony.
Organizers ask that participants either bring an ornament or use one of their ornaments to help decorate their tree.
The decorating will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 27, at the Arts Council's Gallery on Main, 118-B North Main Street, Louisburg.

Living Healthy with Chronic Pain, a workshop offered in Franklin County, teaches people with chronic pain effective self-management techniques to deal with problems. These techniques include exercises for maintaining and improving strength, methods to communicate effectively with your doctor and family, ways that nutrition impacts health, and how to pace activity and rest. It is for adults of all ages who live with chronic pain.

The volunteer group, Looming with Love, who knit and crochet scarves and hats for Franklin County school children in need of these items, is looking for anyone who will donate yarn to help replenish their yarn supply.

DURHAM -- Nick Cunard of Louisburg, an eighth-grade student at Kerr-Vance Academy, Henderson, is among the students honored by the Duke University Talent Identification Program (Duke TIP) for their exceptional scores on the ACT or SAT. Cunard received the award over the summer.
Duke TIP's 7th Grade Talent Search identifies students across the United States who have scored at or above the 95th percentile on a grade-level standardized test.

HENDERSON -- Vance-Granville Community College's partner in apprenticeship programs, Youngsville-based Frigi-Temp, has donated a large rooftop air conditioning unit to benefit students enrolled in the college's Air Conditioning, Heating & Refrigeration Technology curriculum program.

WASHINGTON D.C. -- In 1960, the students of Franklin Trade School in Louisburg became part of a landmark study called Project Talent.
They joined more than 400,000 teenagers from across the country, including 9,152 students from 36 schools in NC. Project Talent presented a snapshot of a generation coming of age on the cusp of a new era.

HENDERSON -- Vance-Granville Community College honored 10 students, including a Louisburg resident, who completed the college's Emergency Medical Technician-Paramedic program recently.

YOUNGSVILLE -- Homeowners were accessing damage to their home after a high speed chase landed, essentially, at their doorstep.
Youngsville police filed about a dozen charges against Frankie McDonald Sutton Jr., 23, of Louisburg, alleging he was responsible for the chase and resulting damage the evening of Nov. 15.

CASTALIA -- The Northeast Franklin Revitalization Committee will feature a speaker focusing on parks and recreation and tourism.
The Nov. 26 meeting at Red Bud Baptist Church will feature Duarte Morais, an extension tourism specialist with the State Extension Office.
The group has three goals: improving broadband service in the area, bolstering agritourism, and marketing and promoting the area.

YOUNGSVILLE -- Town commissioners met in closed session last week to review candidate applications.
It was the latest step in the board's attempt to hire its next town administrator -- who will be the first full-time leader the town has had in nearly eight years.
In September, the town hired Chapel Hill-based Development Associates to guide them in their efforts to hire the next town administrator.

BUNN -- Using food truck policies from Creedmoor and Spring Hope as boilerplates, the town set about crafting a policy by which mobile food vendors would be regulated in town.
The discussion of the food truck policy took place during a special called meeting on Nov. 16 that, in many ways, was a work session.

It has been 100 years since the brutal trench battles and poison gas attacks that killed thousands of men on both sides was finally over.
The war caused a huge loss of life among Franklin County natives and one local woman, Betty King has set out to document the casualties of the war so that future generations will remember the sacrifices made by a previous generation.

FRANKLINTON -- Memorial Day is the day most associated with remembering the servicemen and women who paid the ultimate price.
But, Harvey Satterwhite, commander of American Legion Post 52 in Franklinton, didn't want anyone in attendance to forget about veterans who are still losing their battle to the traumas of war, still.

OXFORD -- The Oxford-Henderson Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. in partnership with the Warren-Vance Community Health Center and the Ladies of Elegance Social Club of Oxford will sponsor Free HIV Testing on Saturday, Dec. 1, at the Mary Potter Middle School Gym, 200 Taylor Street, Oxford, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
