Sheriff-elect Kent Winstead raises his hand in victory and to thank supporters
Winstead rolls to easy win in sheriff's race

LOUISBURG -- Still reeling from the euphoria of his big election win and running on very little sleep, Sheriff-Elect Kent Winstead was quick to emphasize the three cornerstones of his campaign during his first interview Wednesday morning.
Those cornerstones are unity, transparency and accountability, three traits which he has repeatedly pledged to bring to the Franklin County Sheriff's Department after he is sworn in on Dec. 2.

Election's results by the numbers

LOUISBURG -- Franklin County has a new sheriff.
Kent Winstead earned more than 55 percent of the vote, with 10,895 votes to the 8,873 tallies that incumbent Sheriff Jerry Jones received.
The race for the sheriff's office, though, wasn't the only contested matter.

'Strange' parking spots equal good, common sense
'Strange' parking spots equal good, common sense

With the mid-term elections finally over -- finally over!! -- maybe it's time to look at some other issues around our county and region.
It's been a while since we've done one of those "cheers and jeers" columns but that seems to fit.
First, cheers to the Franklin County EMS folks for a common sense, cost-effective way of trimming response times for ambulances.

Finally, awful election ordeal is behind us!

By the time you read this, Election 2014 will be over -- in North Carolina at least!
Other states may be facing run-offs to determine winners but, on Monday prior to Election Day, it appears that we North Carolinians will be spared more of the ordeal that has been Election 2014.
This editorial was written intentionally before all the votes were cast for a particular reason.

Voting can change a nation, even if you ran to the polls
Voting can change a nation, even if you ran to the polls

I saw two things in the last few days that were incredibly inspiring.
On Sunday morning, I witnessed 50,000 runners brave bitter cold and blustery winds to test their mettle against a 26.2 mile course in New York.
Whether they finished or not, their willingness to try -- and push on -- was inspiring, whether they took home first place or finished dead last.

McCrory shifting positions with an eye on '16 elections
McCrory shifting positions with an eye on '16 elections

I spent 15 years coaching basketball where time is the biggest factor late in the game.
At this moment I find it working against me. When this article is published my readers will know the results of the 2014 elections in Franklin County, but it is being written prior to Election Day so I don't.
My dilemma was what to write about in view of those facts.
Governor McCrory solved it for me; he started the 2016 campaign.

Post-election the question still remains

Well, the elections are over; did you win?
If your answer is yes, even if we are not of the same mind on things, let me join with your many friends and admirers to say congratulations.
I have already seen and heard the snide gloating comments by those that are doing what I will call cackling at the expense of others.

Courthouse bell: a historic artifact or just a bell?

Recently the old bell that hung for decades in the Franklin County courthouse was "liberated" and is being held, hopefully in safety and not as a hostage.
Some have wondered whether the bell was truly a historic artifact -- or just a bell.
That question got local amateur historians to do a little "digging" through various records and the results prove that the bell has played an important role in local lives for many years.
