Franklin County residents were treated to several ways to celebrate this country’s independence.
And many of them proved they were willing to pay for it.
Franklin County’s festivities jump started holiday celebrations as the county’s Parks and Recreation Department hosted free festivities at Louisburg High School on Tuesday, July 3.

If Frankin County and Youngsville town commissioners expect to meet a self-created deadline, they need to take action at separate meetings this week.
First up is Franklin County, which meets on Monday.
Both sides announced in May that they were working toward a plan to transfer Youngsville’s water and utility system to the county.

The State Bar has filed a complaint against an area attorney, alleging he was involved in an inappropriate sexual relationship.
It’s the second time in nine years that the agency responsible for regulating the practice of law in North Carolina has alleged that Steven Decillis was responsible for a sexual transgression.

GOOD MORNING: After one of the mildest winter’s that I can recall, Mother Nature has certainly turned up the thermostat on us, and there’s apparently little or no real relief in sight.
Daytime high temperatures in the upper 90’s to around 100 or higher appear to be in store for us at least thru the weekend with less than a 50 percent chance of precipitation.
A news summary this week put it this way: Americans are cool to Obamacare but cold to Romneycare.
That’s a pretty good summary, if you ask us, especially since no one knows what Romneycare may be.
It’s also an opening to discuss our nation’s health care crisis.
It’s interesting that Obamacare has been so roundly chastised by his challenger, Mitt Romney, because Romney instigated a very similar program while he was governor of Massachusetts.
Grab your wallet and watch carefully — if this week’s surprise announcement in the Duke-Progress Energy “merger” is any indication, we’re in for a rough ride.
Not that a rough ride is a surprise for any of us who have long believed that allowing these two huge utilities to “merge” (it’s probably more accurate to say Duke has been allowed to buy Progress, but that may get our electricity shut off) was a bad idea!

While I don’t necessarily agree or disagree with the recent assertions of letter writer Ken Jones in reference to the latest round of controversy regarding prayer in the Franklin County public school system, I did get an ironic chuckle out of the response to Jones’ letter from Mike Meno, communications manager for the ACLU of North Carolina.

WAKE FOREST - James David “Jimmy” Faison, 56, died Tuesday, July 3, 2012. Funeral services were held Friday, July 6, in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home. Burial followed in the Wake Forest Cemetery.
RALEIGH - Myron Uzzle “Bud” Tuttle, 91, died Monday, July 2, 2012. Services to honor his memory were held Friday, July 6, at Bryan-Lee Funeral Home, Raleigh. Private burial for the family followed the service.
ZEBULON - Donald Jay Clarke, 76, died Wednesday, July 4, 2012. A memorial service with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, in the Strickland Funeral Home Chapel, Wendell.
ZEBULON - Elma Lee Hedgepeth Bowen, 79, died Tuesday, July 3, 2012. A private memorial service was planned at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah’s Witnesses, Zebulon.
YOUNGSVILLE —Sylvia Carter Ray, 75, died Thursday, July 5, 2012 at her home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 7, in the chapel of Bright Funeral Home, Wake Forest. Burial will follow in Ridgecrest Baptist Church cemetery.
WAKE FOREST - James Edward Massenburg, 61, died Thursday, June 28, 2012, at Wake Medical Center in Raleigh. Funeral services were held Friday, July 6, at Olive Branch Baptist Church in Wake Forest, with Dr. L. A. Carson officiating. Interment was in the Massenburg family plot at Friendship Chapel Baptist Church, Wake Forest.
ROCKY MOUNT - Martha Duane Dickerson, 70, passed away Wednesday July 4, 2012. She was born June 10, 1942 in Talladega County, Alabama. She was the daughter of the late Robert and Stokley Mae Gravette. Duane was a loving mother, sister, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was affectionately known as Grandma Dewey. She retired from the Franklin County Dept. of Social Services after many years of faithful service.

WARRENTON -- Louisburg’s All-Stars made a Major impression on each of its three foes during action at the Dixie Youth Major League Baseball District Tournament.
Louisburg played one game apiece against
every potential opponent in the four-team field at the annual event, which was held at the Warren County Recreation Complex.

SMITHFIELD -- Three Franklin County squads will be in action beginning next Thursday at the Tar Heel 10-Under and 8-Under State Softball Tournaments.
The event is being held at Smithfield Community Park, which is located adjacent to Smithfield-Selma High School in Johnston County.
LOUISBURG -- Louisburg College has finalized its sites and opponents for the 2012 football season.
The Hurricanes will open Sept. 1 on the road against Erie Community College in Western New York.
LC’s first home game will be Sept. 16 vs. Gray Military Academy at the Old Franklinton High School Football Field.
The Franklin County 14-Under Torros claimed the championship at the recent Batters Box Invitational Baseball Tournament in Goldsboro.
Mike McGuire hadn’t planned on leaving Louisburg College’s baseball program after just one season -- until he saw that the diamond position was vacant at Morehead State University.
McGuire has a special attachment to Morehead -- he received a master’s degree at the school while earning his first assistant coaching job under then-Eagles coach Frank Spaniol.
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Christian Buffaloe, a 12-year-old local Kyokushin Karate fighter, won the 11-13 Youth Division of the All American Open Kyokushin Championships on June 23 in New York City.
The Kyokushin All American Open was established in 1996 to bring in the best full-contact knockdown karate competition from North, Central and South America, but has evolved to welcome the best fighters from Europe, the African continent, Russia, Asia, and the South Pacific region.
ZEBULON -- The Salem Red Sox snapped a five-game losing skid by running past the Carolina Mudcats 12-3 in front of a sold-out crowd of 6,871 on Wednesday night at Five County Stadium in a Class A Carolina League baseball event.
Salem (4-10, 45-38) pounded out 19 hits to halt the Mudcats’ winning streak at three games. Carolina drops to 9-5 in the second half and 41-43 overall.

A thunderstorm rushing through Franklin County on Thursday afternoon knocked down this tree near a home on East River Road. No injuries were reported. The storm knocked out power for hours.
Franklin County sheriff’s deputies are looking for a suspect who was chased away from a property by gunshots.
Allan Parrish reported to authorities during the early morning hours of July 5 that his wife woke him up and advised that someone was trying to steal items from his business on Perdues Road.
