County commissioners approved a policy to make sure drips don’t fall through the cracks.
Public Utilities Director Bryce Mendenhall proposed a leak adjustment policy, outlining the criteria by which staff is able to adjust a customer’s account due to a reported water leak.
CLOSED FOR BUSINESS. County commissioners declined to take action on a rezoning request seen as the first step toward turning this vacant building into a convenience store on West River Road.

Area law enforcement agencies combined to take the fireworks off of Franklin County roads.
Police officers from Bunn, Franklinton, Louisburg and Youngsville combined to saturate Franklin County roads during the Independence Day holiday, looking for those driving while impaired and those who posed other hazards on the roadway.

Louisburg police arrested a man known as “Little Killer” on charges that he robbed and assaulted someone with a dangerous weapon.
Augustus Lamont Williams, 23, didn’t make the arrest easy, though, trying to escape police custody twice, according to officials.

A Franklinton youngster is recovering from injuries he suffered in a go-cart accident.
According to a report by Franklinton Police Sgt. K.J. Hornaday, Antoine Jamal Perry was riding a go-cart on S. Chavis Street the afternoon of July 8 when he apparently began to turn the vehicle around in the roadway.

There will be a new flock of eagles soaring over Franklin County in coming months, clad in purple and gold. The school’s motto will be: “Learn Today, Lead Tomorrow.”

Wait just a minute. Something doesn’t seem quite right.
We North Carolinians have been watching — and listening — for some time while our elected officials discussed ethics and made excuses for the many flagrant abuses of office, power and influence that have become the order of the day in state government.
GOOD MORNING: We finally received some substantial rainfall out my way over the weekend – something like 1.3 inches, according to my little rain gauge. We badly needed it.
ANTE UP: Notice to political office seekers, particularly those seeking elected office in Raleigh and Washington. The Franklin County vote this year comes with a price tag – funding for U.S. 401. And this applies particularly to incumbent office holders seeking to hang onto their current offices.
Ah, the differences.
As I sat and read Sunday’s News and Observer, I came across an article about the proposed Southeast High Speed Rail project.
Public hearings on the project began this week, but if you’ve been listening, grumbling about the project’s impact began some time ago.

Dear Editor,
I am very much disturbed that our beautiful old historic Oakwood Cemetery just north of town has been robbed of all its living beauty by having the shrubbery and all growth cut or sawed down level with the ground. A few pieces — maybe six or eight — escaped this premeditated deed, which occurred around the first part of May. This resulted from orders issued by representatives of the Town of Louisburg.

With sadness, I visited Oakwood Cemetery.
Much of its character has been destroyed. There is no way the town can reimburse people for the damage. It is not the monetary value that people are so upset about, it is the principle of some uncaring people going on someone else’s property and destroying memories of so many.

Everybody talks about the waste in government spending, but it seems as if they forgot one waste. The tar and rocks that they put on the roads are in worse shape when they are through than when they started.

That’s all that kept the Louisburg All-Stars from possibly forcing extra innings against Zebulon in last Saturday’s Championship Round of the Tar Heel League 8-Under Coach-Pitch Softball Tournament at Luddy Park.

YOUNGSVILLE -- Early on, it became almost a foregone conclusion that a talented Wendell club would hoist the championship trophy at the Tar Heel League 10-Under Softball Tournament at Luddy Park.
After all, Wendell also competes as a year-round travel team, and its roster features four pitchers that were probably better than anyone else on an opposing squad.
CHERRYVILLE -- Even after a second-round loss, the Bunn Ponytails are still alive at the Dixie Softball State 12-Under Tournament.
Bunn, coached by Jeff Davis, bounced back from that setback to defeat Rockingham County bny a 5-2 score Monday in Cherryville, which is located just west of Lincolnton.
FRANKLINTON -- Franklinton High School gridiron fans can get an early look at their team during a passing league showcase next Monday (July 19) at the FHS Football Field.
The event will begin at 6 p.m. In addition to the host Red Rams, other featured teams will be Southern Vance, South Granville, Rocky Mount, Wake Forest-Rolesville and Wakefield.
The Bunn Warriors, coached by Quinton Sanders, took the top prize at last weekend’s USSSA Baseball Swing Away Invitational Tournament, which was held at The Factory in Wake Forest. Bunn defeated the GCAA Wildcats by a 10-2 score to earn the title.
LOUISBURG -- Town and Country’s Stingrays took on the Winchester Waves from Raleigh on July 1 in recent swim action at the TC Pool.
The visitors came away with a 270-159 decision over the Stingrays.
JACKSON, TENN. -- Tom Cochran won his fourth straight start, while Carolina pounded out 15 hits en route to a 9-1 victory over West Tenn at Pringles Park last Saturday night in a Class AA Southern League baseball matchup.
The Mudcats (11-8) overtook sole possession of first place with their third win in four games over West Tenn (6-13).
ROCKY MOUNT -- Since 1999, North Carolina Wesleyan College has honored 45 former athletes, administrators, teams, coaches, and contributors by enshrining them in its Athletics Hall of Fame.

The marriage of Brittany Suzanne Holton and James Erskin Young III (Chip) was celebrated Saturday evening, May 1, at 5:30 p.m. at Louisburg United Methodist Church in Louisburg. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. Earl Dulaney, pastor of Louisburg United Methodist.
J. Denise Davis and Barry Orlando Edgerton were united in marriage on Saturday, June 5, 2010. The evening ceremony was held at Perry’s Missionary Baptist Church in Centerville. Pastor Randolph Alston united them in holy matrimony with a double-ring ceremony. A dinner/reception followed at the Perry’s High School Alumni Building. On the eve of the wedding the bride- and groom-elect hosted a rehearsal cookout at their home.
Earl and Frances Burnette of Raleigh, both Franklin County natives, celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Saturday, June 19, at a dinner reception at the Trinity Baptist Church Fellowship Hall in Raleigh. The couple was married on May 31, 1950 in Dillon, S.C.
Matthew and Chassidy Tondee of Louisburg are proud to announce the birth of their daughter, Christy Marie Tondee, born June 7, 2010 at 1:38 p.m. at Rex Hospital in Raleigh. She weighed 9 pounds, 12 ounces and was 22 inches long.
Paternal grandparents are Mark and Rhonda Tondee of Louisburg.

Eleven graduates of the Child Care Center on Vance-Granville Community College’s Franklin County Campus were honored in ceremonies on June 30 as they prepare to leave and enter kindergarten this fall.
COMMUNITY NEWS
John May, a veteran Franklin County Board of Education member, was honored Monday night by that board. May served on the school board from Dec. 2002 to April 2010 when he resigned to take the seat in the North Carolina House of Representatives vacated by Lucy Allen, who moved to the Utilities Commission.
The Cherry Hill Concert Series, which is held in the Warren County community of Inez, is sponsoring a Summer Music Festival and Camp Aug. 2 to 5.
The camp will feature organ workshops for children and adults, the first time this has been held at Cherry Hill.
The Louisburg Lions Club had their year end club banquet in July at Louisburg College which resulted in new leadership for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. Pictured above passing the gavel is (L to R) new Lions President Victor Bethea, along with outgoing President Phil Mueller.
Law enforcement is looking for a boat reported stolen by a Youngsville area man.
George Murphy of Tarboro Road reported on July 9 that someone stole his two-man boat.
According to a report by Dep. J. Poplawski, Murphy last remembered seeing the off-white and green boat on July 2, but noted it missing the afternoon of July 8.
