Snow and bitter-cold temperatures combined earlier this week to close schools and cancel meetings.
Fortunately, said emergency services personnel, the late-winter storm only caused scheduling problems.
“We didn’t have any major issues,” said Emergency Services Director Randy Likens.
“There were sporadic power outages, but no widespread problems.”
The storm passed through the area early Monday, dropping several inches of snow.

Louisburg police are investigating signs of possible gang activity.
The department was notified of what appears to be a gang sign on a stop sign at the corner of Edgewood Drive and Wilder Street, just a few blocks from Louisburg High School.
Louisburg Police Chief Rick Lassiter said the sign, which contains a six-pointed star and some numbers scrolled at the bottom, does not appear to be the signature of true gang culture.

It can be argued that when a person stays in a place long enough, he becomes that place.
That’s a saying that seemingly fits Youngsville Elementary School Principal Rick Smith.
Smith, who began teaching at YES in the early 80s, has spent the past decade as the person in charge at the successful campus.

BITTER/SWEET: Overheard Tuesday around noon: “Why did they call school off today? The roads are clear.”
Spotted on Monday around 10 a.m.: A teenager bundled up on the front porch of a home in Bunn. She was reading a book.
The snow and ice certainly did keep students out of the classroom Monday and Tuesday in Franklin County.
GOOD MORNING: Despite the snow and sub-freezing temperatures we’re currently enjoying, here’s something that should make you feel all warm and fuzzy.
A group of 300 civic and business leaders from across the region reportedly conducted a planning exercise in Raleigh this past Friday to “decide where the region’s jobs, houses and transit lines should be.”
I’m a bit conflicted.
Monday morning’s storm brought a few inches of snow and the cold temperatures provided some icing in some areas.
That made my morning commute a bit interesting, but there were no major issues.
Still, it was always amusing to look off onto the side of the road and see an urban assault vehicle stuck in a ditch on the side of the road.

I read on the front page of Saturday’s edition of The Franklin Times that Gov. Perdue plans to transfer funds from the Education Lottery Reserve Fund, the Public School Building Capital Fund and the Public School Textbook Fund to support other government initiatives. I’m not surprised.

LOUISBURG - Graveside services for Jamel Williams, 31, of Brooklyn, N.Y., who died Saturday, Feb. 21, 2009, were conducted Tuesday, March 3, at the Williams-McLeod family cemetery in Louisburg.
FRANKLINTON - Funeral services for Cynthia O. Skinner, 53, who died Sunday, Feb. 22, 2009, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 5, at New Birth Christian Temple Church, with Dr. William H. Garner officiating.
LOUISBURG - Funeral services for Alexander Lee Perry, 80, of Baltimore, Md., formerly of Louisburg, who died Saturday, Feb. 28, 2009, will be conducted at noon Thursday, March 5.
It will be at Nelson Chapel Baptist Church, with the Rev. Emma Solomon officiating.
Burial will follow in the Mary H. Jones cemetery.
Surviving: daughter, Willie P. Lawrence of Louisburg; sister, Priscilla Williams of Louisburg; brothers, Harry Perry Jr. and Eddie Perry, both of Louisburg; and one grandchild.
Open visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today (Wednesday, March 4) at Richardson Funeral Home in Louisburg.
LOUISBURG - Bennett Crad “Man” Brantley, 66, died Saturday afternoon, Feb. 28, 2009. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, March 6, in the chapel of Strickland Funeral Home in Louisburg, with the Rev. Shane Brantley officiating. He was the son of the late Clifton Bennett and Edna Pearce Brantley and was preceded in death by his sister, Brenda Williford.
LOUISBURG – Carnette Joyner Rowe, 88, of Louisburg, went home to be with the Lord early Monday morning at her home with family by her side.
LOUISBURG - Edna Nell Bennett Boone of Louisburg died Sunday, March 1, 2009 at her home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 11:00 a.m. from the chapel of Lancaster Funeral and Cremation Services, with the Rev. Jack Carter, the Rev. Winfred Porter and the Rev. Leo Bennett, Jr. officiating. Burial will follow in the Boone Family Cemetery.
Mrs. Melrose Alford Williams Caines, 78, passed away to be with her Lord, Jesus Christ, on Sunday March 1, 2009 at Hospice of High Point, NC.
RALEIGH - Katherene Allen Patterson, 80, died Monday, March 2, 2009 at her home. Katherene was born on May 22, 1928 in Person County to the late Lafayette David Allen and Mamie Meadows Allen. She retired in March 1983 as an Administrative Assistant with the N. C. Department of Human Resources. She was a member of Louisburg United Methodist Church.
LOUISBURG - Urtie Lillian Sledge Wolozin, born June 25, 1918, passed away on Tuesday, March 3, 2009, at Louisburg Nursing Center. She was the daughter of the late Walter Ernest Sledge and Nonie Lillian Parrish of Louisburg, N.C. Mrs. Wolozin retired from the State of North Carolina, John Umstead Hospital. She was a longtime member of Hickory Rock Baptist Church, an avid gardener, and a proud grandmother. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2:00 p.m. from the chapel of Lancaster Funeral and Cremation Services with the Rev. Luke Smith officiating. Entombment will follow in Lancaster Memorial Park.

WENTWORTH - Basketball coaches love to say that there is no such thing as a good loss.
But in retrospect, Louisburg College women’s hoops mentor Mike Holloman can’t help but think his club’s turning point for the season came not from a glorious victory -- but a painful defeat.
On Jan. 24, the Lady Hurricanes were topped at home by Wilkes Community College -- a club that has become LC’s chief rival in the new configuration of the Region X Division II standings.

LOUISBURG -- Excuse John Meeks for having a disgusted feeling in the pit of his stomach following the close of the Region X Men’s Basketball Tournament.
Meeks, Louisburg College’s head coach, saw his Hurricanes lose by two points to Lenoir during last Saturday’s tourney semifinals at Rockingham Community College in Wentworth.
LC led by two points in the closing minute, but the Lancers collected the final four tallies of the game to advance into the championship game.

LOUISBURG -- Vance-Granville exceeded even its own coach’s expectations during its initial season on the junior college men’s basketball level.
In 2007-09, VGCC began its hoops program and competed as a club team under head coach Avery Wilson.
This year meant a hefty jump up to take part in the Region X Division II standings, but the Vanguards proved to be more than up to the challenge.
FRANKLIN COUNTY -- Franklinton’s Gar Ayscue has been saluted as the Northern Carolina Conference Wrestler of the Year for the 2009-10 campaign.
Ayscue competed in the 119-pound class and helped the Red Rams to their second straight NCC regular season crown. Franklinton, coached by Jon Pearsall, also won the league tournament for the first time in school history.

Snow and ice prompted the Franklin County Board of Commissioners to reschedule meetings planned for Monday night.
The first shuffle will occur this Thursday, when the board will meet in a closed session during a special-called meeting to discuss pending litigation.

BUNN — Town officials put a half-a-million-dollar grant in their budget on Monday night, taking another step toward providing the capacity they’ll need for growth.
Town staff said commercial and residential development has forced them to move forward with plans to double their sewer capacity.

Louisburg College President Dr. Mark La Branche has announced that a national search for a vice president of enrollment management has ended in bringing to the college someone close to home, and someone who will be returning to her former home.
Stephanie Buchanan Tolbert, a Louisburg College graduate and former employee of the institution, will take over as the new vice president of enrollment management at the College beginning June 1, 2009. She will be replacing Tracey Sala, who has resigned her post to stay home with her two young sons.
S&L Farm has been awarded the “Animal Welfare Approved” seal for high-welfare animal husbandry and has recently received a grant from the Animal Welfare Approved program.
The grant will be used to improve and expand on-farm hatching and breeding abilities. Animal Welfare Approved is a free certification program granted to family farmers who adhere to the high animal welfare husbandry standards outlined by the non-profit program.
Curves of Franklinton is rolling out the red carpet to members of the award-winning Healthways SilverSneakers Fitness Program, the nation’s leading exercise program designed for older adults. SilverSneakers members are eligible to join Curves of Franklinton at no cost.
AgCarolina Financial experienced another successful year in 2008. During 2008, the Association realized net earnings of $18.2 million. Loan volume increased during 2008 to $839 million, a 6.9 percent increase from the previous year. The longer-term loan growth trend has also been outstanding. Over the past five years, the Association has experienced a 53.7 percent increase in loan volume.
