The Blues held on for a hard-fought 54-49 victory Thursday night during the United Way All -Star Basketball Game, and efforts to raise money for worthy organizations this year are expected to be just as intense.
The game, in its eighth year, serves as the kickoff for fund-raising efforts and United Way has set a goal of $115,000.

A pit bull attack Thursday afternoon left one family pet dead and another clinging to life this weekend.
It also left a couple heartbroken.
Jackson and Pattie Taylor adopted two Catahoula Leopard dogs from the Franklin County Animal Shelter earlier this week.

FRANKLINTON - James Samuel Person, 63, a native of Franklin County, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2007 in Paterson, N. J. Funeral services were conducted Wed., Sept. 19, at Manassas Chapel, Franklinton.
RALEIGH - Addie Orrell Long, 94, died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007 at Litchford Falls Healthcare and Rehab. Center.
FRANKLINTON - Funeral services for the Rev. Roger Brodie, 96, who died Wednesday, Sept. 19, 2007, will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, at Perry’s Missionary Baptist Church, with the Rev. S. T. Tunstall officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
LOUISBURG - Judy Murphy Ritch died Friday, Sept. 21, 2007. Funeral arrangements by Lancaster Funeral & Cremation Service were incomplete at press time.

FRANKLINTON -- The Franklinton Red Rams are a different team when Robbie Paugh and Jerrett McLean aren’t around to hold down the back of the team’s defense.
That was evident during Wednesday’s home matchup against Northern Vance -- a club the Red Rams had topped by three goals just two weeks earlier.

The notion that there is an advantage in learning a foreign language at an early age might be true to a certain extent. But it may also be a harmful misconception for adults who are eager to learn a language other than their native tongue. With a popular misconception, adults can become doubtful of their ability to learn a new language.

Gov. Mike Easley recently appointed S. Quon Bridges as District Court judge for the 9th Judicial District, which covers Franklin, Granville, Vance and Warren counties. Bridges takes the vacant seat created by the death of District Court judge H. Weldon Lloyd in June 2007.

Members of the Franklin County Tourism Development Authority want to do more to draw visitors to the county.
Since February of 2006, the occupancy tax has generated $88,700 and the county has authorized spending $9,200 in operating expenses for the Tourism Development Authority (TDA) and grants for events that bring visitors to the community.

BUNN -- Just a few hours before the opening kickoff Friday, Bunn High School head football coach David Howle talked about how meaningless his team’s No. 4 Class 2-A state ranking really was.
And Howle also surmised that Nash Central, after dropping games to BHS in each of the past two seasons, would be a fired-up bunch when the Bulldogs traveled to Franklin County for a non-conference showdown against the Wildcats.
FRANKLINTON -- Victories are becoming contagious at Franklinton, and this time a homecoming crowd was on hand for the celebration.
For the second time in three weeks, the Red Rams have collected a victory following Friday’s 28-0 home decision over a winless Princeton club.
ROANOKE RAPIDS -- Following a slow start, the Louisburg Warriors began to surge in the second quarter en route to posting a 30-7 road victory Friday against Russell Weinstein’s Roanoke Rapids Yellow Jackets.
LHS didn’t find the end zone in the initial frame, but the Jackets did, thanks to a 3-yard run from Tremayne Simmons. After the PAT, Roanoke Rapids had claimed a 7-0 advantage.
