HENDERSON - Mattie T. Kearney, 73, died Friday, April 20, 2007. A memorial service was conducted Saturday, April 28, at Island Hill Christian Church in Clarksville, Va., with the Rev. John E. Jefferson officiating.

She was one of nine children born to the late Pinkie and Taylor Tarry. Mrs. Kearney was a retired educator of Prince George’s County, Md. She received her BS degree in commercial education (cum laude) from North Carolina A&T State University, her master of science degree from Columbia University in New York, and further studied at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and the University of Michigan of Ann Arbor.

Surviving: her husband, Joshua W. Kearney formerly of Franklinton; one son, Brent Kearney (Nevada) of Silver Spring, Md.; one dughter, Terry Nelson (Russell) of Gaithersburg, Md.; sisters, Frances Woody of Jersey City, N.J., Mary Hunt of Tampa, Fla., Evelyn Tarry of Henderson, and Patricia Fields of Bronx, N. Y.; and four grandchildren.
